“Gerba was touched by god.” I wouldn’t say that in the last three matches he played against Honduras (two WCQ matches and then the GC 09), yet he’s afforded the same “he’s not getting the right service” excuse given to Friend by his supporters. Gerba’s (and Canada’s) best match in WCQ was the Mexico game in Edmonton, where he played alongside Radzinski and was supported by a midfield featuring De Jong and then Pozniak on the left, Stalteri on the right, and BERNIER and HARMSE in the centre. So since the higher profile midfield players were absent that night, perhaps a finger should be pointed at their lack of contributions in previous matches as the prime reason we stunk during the WCQ.

Radzinski scored once in World Cup qualifying but had plenty of chances. Friend didn’t score and didn’t look like he ever would. Gerba was touched by god. Aside from cameos by guys like Occean and Charles Gbeke, that was our strikeforce. In the Gold Cup, Friend was absent with injury so it’s not fair to include him in a comparison. Jackson and Josh Simpson, though, both showed more than Friend ever did.

You say all of the strikers are scoring except Friend. I beg to disagree. Only Gerba is scoring. McKenna and Radzinski got the bulk of their goals years ago, and the rest aren’t scoring either. A statistical argument can be made for Ali, but not really anyone else in the striker pool.

Anyway, the real disappointment of today’s match (actually both matches) was de Guzman, who looked very much like a run-of-the-mill MLS-level defensive midfielder. Might as well have had Sam Cronin in there.
